Day 1:

Morning Session

Introduction:

• Welcome to LSP

• Outline Course Programme.

• Suggested follow-up Reading List

• Introduction of delegates

Editorial processes and methods:

• The editorial office and the role of the copy-editor

• The constituent parts of a book and conventions of page sequencing/numbering

• How to work on copy (authors’ manuscripts)

Short break

Copy-editing and house-style:

• Copy-editing — copy-editing marks and how to use them

• Doing it in Style — an introduction to publishing house style

• London School of Publishing House Style — Quick Reference Guide

• Copy-editing Exercise

Lunch break (30 minutes)

Afternoon Session

Watch your language:

• Dictionaries and checking spellings/meanings

• English for copy-editors:

• Capitals and when to use them

• Quotes and quotation marks

• Hyphens and Dashes.

• Apostrophes — use and misuse

• Copy-editing Exercise

Homework:

Copy-editing Exercise: (for feedback session at start of Day Two)

 

Day 2:

Morning Session

Editorial production, publishing legalities and the BSI Proofing Marks

• Feedback and review session on the copy-editing homework

• The Editing and Production Process — from author to press

• Trademarks — use and misuse in copy

• Media Law — Defamation and Copyright

Short break

• Introduction to Proof-reading and BSI Proof Correction Marks

• Dealing with typesetting problems on proofs — word-splitting and bad breaks

• Proof-reading Exercises

Lunch break (30 minutes)

Afternoon Session

Proofs and the process of proofreading

• Types of Proofs (eg: galley, page, etc)

• Proof-reading Exercises

• Feedback on exercises

• Review

Assessment and Certificate:

Delegates will tackle hands-on exercises at the end of each section to cement their learning, and personal achievement will be assessed throughout the course.

Certificates will be issued upon completion of the course.
