LSP KEY STAFF
John Dalton – Director
A graduate of biochemistry from London University, John started his publishing career in 1991, when he became a medical editor for a leading scientific publisher. John was managing editor of Current Opinion in Gastroenterology, one of the world's leading medical review journals.
In addition to this role, he was also Project Editor for a number of monographs aimed at GPs and Consultants.
An author himself, John is familiar with the publishing process and ensures that all courses at LSP are delivered to the highest standard expected from both course delegates and the publishing industry.
John joined the David Game Media Group as a consultant and developed their media schools, which include the London School of Public Relations (LSPR). He left his Editorial role to take control of the London School of Publishing. He is currently Course Director of LSP and is a member of the International Institute of Strategic Studies.
In 2002 John was commissioned to write a report on Corporate Reputation, which was published in 2003.
John works closely with the LSP teaching staff to ensure that all the course contents are kept up-to-date and continuously reflect any changes and developments within the publishing industry.
Dalal Nageh – Course Director
Dalal is Course Director for LSP and has been working with the School since 1999. Under Dalal’s leadership and management, the School has grown considerably. In addition to her work at LSP, Dalal teaches Organisational Behaviour to undergraduate students in preparation for their entry to the second year of their degrees as well as Management and Marketing on the University Foundation and Pre-Masters courses at David Game College of which LSP is part.
Dalal is always available to discuss course delegates' progress and liaises continuously with the LSP tutors. Furthermore, Dalal works closely with John Dalton on course delegates' progress as well as syllabus development; ensuring that the content of the courses is up-to-date, dynamic and relevant.
TUTORS
Jeff Davy – Course Tutor: Editorial & Proofreading and Advanced Editorial
Jeff Davy has worked in journalism and publishing for more than 30 years, and in publishing education and training for the last 23 years – for colleges and training bodies as well as major publishing companies. He has been a tutor at the London School of Publishing (LSP) since 1995.
He has worked as an Editor, Publications Editor and Editorial Manager on a wide range of publications. He also jointly ran a consultancy advising companies on their internal/external communications and training policies.
Jeff was a senior lecturer in journalism at the London College of Communication (formerly the London College of Printing), part of the University of the Arts London, for six years in the 1980s and again from 1997-2003. During the intervening years he worked as a freelance production editor and trainer. He is currently a Visiting Tutor, teaching on the College’s BA (Hons) Journalism course. Jeff is one of LSP's longest established tutors, teaching on the Editorial & Proofreading courses. He is also a trainer on a number of LSP's in-house bespoke courses offered to clients.
He is a Fellow of the British Association of Communicators in Business and has won three BACB editing awards. He is also a member of: the National Union of Journalists; the Association for Journalism Education; and the Institute for Learning and Teaching, now being re-named The Higher Education Academy. In 2001, Jeff received the School's award for his contribution to editorial training. Jeff is highly valued at LSP as an approachable tutor dedicated to his students' success.
Samantha Johnson - Picture Research Tutor : Picture Editor - Penguin
Samantha Johnson has over twelve years of experience as a picture researcher and is currently Picture Editor of Penguin, a publishing house which is as proud of its visual identity as it is of its authors. Within Penguin, Sam sources and commissions photography, illustration and artwork to help create Penguin's unique style.
Sam has previously worked across the spectrum of the profession in both commercial and academic fields, as the supplier of images from within image libraries and archives and as the client - both freelance and in-house. Her previous employers include the Royal Photographic Society, where she managed the commercial aspects of their outstanding photographic collection, the Science Museum, National Museum of Photography, Film & Television, the School of Oriental and African Studies and the University of Westminster, where she was a Visiting Lecturer in Modern History.
Formerly a representative for the photographic industry on the British Copyright Council, Sam has in-depth and up to date knowledge of Intellectual Property Rights as they affect the picture industry today. She also has
detailed knowledge of digital imaging and current working practice for picture researchers within image libraries and on picture desks. Sam has specialist knowledge and interest in historical image archives, with a Masters degree in Modern History.
Marianne Gray - Feature Writing Tutor: Freelance Journalist
Marianne Gray is a freelance journalist based in London writing interviews and features for British and international publications, such as Eve, the Times and the Evening standard. She trained as a reporter on newspapers in South Africa, has edited The Athens News, worked in syndication for magazine group Media 24, broadcast on both radio and television and written several books including biographies on French actors Gerard Depardieu and Jeanne Moreau (published by Little Brown) and self-employment handbooks Working from Home and The Freelance Alternative (Piatkus).
Marianne has taught Journalism at City University, London, and at visiting summer schools of American universities in Europe. She is vice-chairman of the Film Section of the British Critics¹ Circle, a member of Fipresci and London correspondent for the Arts Review Section of The Weekender.
She has written in the UK for publications as diverse as magazines Arena to Saga, Radio Times to New Woman, various inflight magazines and colour supplements. She has also written for a variety of UK newspapers from The Sunday Times and The Guardian to the Evening Standard and TheLondonPaper.
"My approach to writing is gut-level and I like to cut to the chase and put the reader in the general picture rather than dwell on my own opinion of the situation. Journalism should be about presenting facts so that the reader can get a balanced enough impression to form their own considered opinion."
Alistair Dabbs - Magazine Sub-Editing Tutor:
Alistair Dabbs is an editorial production specialist and freelance writer and sub-editor with 17 years' professional experience in commercial journalism. A former print buyer and magazine production manager, he retrained as a sub-editor at the beginning of the desktop publishing revolution of the late 1980s, and has since worked on many titles at different publishing houses as sub-editor, production editor and editor-in-chief. Today, Alistair teaches, practises and writes about sub-editing, page layout, print production and digital imaging. His book co-authoring credits include 'The Digital Designer's Bible', 'InDesign Production Cookbook' and 'The Print Manager's Handbook'. He is an Adobe Certified Expert (Adobe InDesign) and a QuarkXPress Certified Expert. Alistair's byline as a writer can be found in sports and travel journals, while his technical tutorials regularly appear in graphic design and computer magazines. He particularly enjoys his work on new magazine launches as an editorial production consultant, and even continues to freelance as a production editor, sub-editor or proof-reader whenever he can, simply because he loves it. He has been a trainer with the London School of Publishing for a number of years. Alistair is very popular with the delegates attending on the LSP open courses as well as the corporate training tailor-made courses, as someone who enjoys training others. He is extremely keen to impart skills using both a practical approach as well emphasising the importance of consistency and high level of skill and understanding of the proofing process.
Tony Mason - Screenwriting tutor:
Tony Mason began life as a journalist but in the best Hollywood tradition turned his hand to screenwriting in 2002. After studying philosophy at university, he began his career on regional newspapers then moved to London where he worked on the Evening Standard, the Sunday Times and The Times.
He spent five years as a freelance writer working on a range national and specialist publications.After co-authoring a bestselling book on the Falkland¹s War, he founded one of the first magazine publishing agencies in the UK and, as Editorial Director, helped turn it into one of the largest companies of its kind in Europe.
After collecting an award for editing the international magazine of the year, he left the publishing business to follow a long-held dream of writing for the movies.
He has written several feature length screenplays, one of which was chosen for development by the Scriptfactory. Based on the life of one of Britain¹s most prolific and gifted art forgers, the script also reached the finals of a major screenwriting contest in LA and attracted the attentions of a Hollywood actor.
Tony has worked as a member of a writers¹ team for the London Script Consultancy, conceived and written a documentary and worked as a consultant to a web TV channel. He has also written several short screenplays, one of which was a winner in the 2006 i-blink International Screenplay Contest. Tony is currently working on a romantic comedy thriller and his first two short films go into production early in 2007.
Julian Woodfield
Julian Woodfield worked as a professional animator and graphic designer from 1984 to 1990, working on a wide range of television commercials, T.V.title sequences and special effects for feature films. In 1989 he was a member of the team that produced the BAFTA award winning Wired title sequence for Channel 4.
After a spell as a Senior Designer at BskyB, Julian worked as a freelance designer and computer animator operating out of offices in both London and Milan.
In 1994 Julian co-founded Media Training which is now an Adobe, Macromedia, Quark and Apple authorised training centre and is acknowledged as a leading training provider in this field in the UK. Julian is proud to have been associated with the London School of Publishing since 1993 as both a tutor and business associate.
